From Liminal Labor to Decent Work: A Human-Centered Perspective on Sustainable Tourism Employment

In its sustainable tourism agenda for 2030, the UN World Tourism Organization has embraced three United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. One of these, specifically SDG 8, highlights need to pursue decent work and growth. Nevertheless, despite growing recognition this target although there is a number writings lamenting precarity characterizing many tourism-related jobs, topic continues receive sparse attention in considerable volume academic literature on sustainability. This paper attempts redress neglect. First, by providing review extant studies labor, we seek explain why research lacuna exist. We then examine organizational technological aspects governance, which hinder establish improve dignity industry worldwide. By acknowledging volatile liminal status future labor market prospects, arrive at following question: what should look like? leads us suggest that development human-centered agenda, focuses workers’ agency resources, offers promising avenue expanding sustainability agenda.
